Tiverton will be seeing the return of the Prince’s Trust personal development training programme for another year, after having a successful track record in recent years. In partnership with Torridge Training Services, the Prince’s Trust is attempting to tackle the problem of youth unemployment that is so prevalent at the moment, and is continuing with the programme that has seen dozens of young people in the Tiverton area turn their lives around and raised money for causes as diverse as Exmoor Zoo and Help for Heroes.

The 12 week programme is designed to get young people into employment by teaching them life skills and improving employability, culminating in the award of the Prince’s Trust Certificate in Employment, Teamwork and Community Skills and a First Aid certificate. Currently it is estimated that roughly one in five young people is not in education, training or employment, a problem which the Prince’s Trust has committed itself to tackling by raising and investing £50 million this year.

Sue Hayman, Youth Team Manager from Torridge Training Services, who are hosting and co-organising the programme, says

“some young people are very lucky and clear about what they want to achieve in their life, but this isn’t the case for everyone. Some young people find themselves stuck at a crossroad, not knowing which direction to go.”

As part of this initiative the Prince’s Trust and Torridge Training Services are appealing for local businesses to get involved and provide student work placements for the participants of the programme. Cathy Fisher, of Brighter Creative near Silverton, believes it is an important opportunity for businesses in the area,

“As local businesses we are integral to the community and are in a position to make a real change to the lives of young people and our community as a whole. Whether it is in a bakery or in a solicitor’s office, the more we participate in our local community through initiatives such as this, the more power we have to make positive changes to that community.”

If you represent a business and would like to participate then please contact Tor Hodgson on 07595 233393 or thodgson@ttsgroup.org.uk. The programme begins on Monday 26th March.
